Abstract   Among the various approaches to evaluate the proliferative activity, recently, PCNA has been introduced as an cell-cycle specific, nuclear antigenic marker of cellular proliferation in other tumors. The present study aimed at assessing the usefulness of PCNA in evaluating the proliferative activity and its prognostic significance in prostatic carcinoma, and compared with flow cytometric DNA analysis. PCNA expression rate was greater in DNA aneuploid group than in diploid group, as was SPF by FCM. A significanct linear realationship was demonstrates between histologic grade and PCNA expression rate, but there was no significant difference of PCNA expression rate according to clinical stage. PCNA expresson rate had no significant relationship to SPF and PI measured by FCM. We evaluated the probability of survival for 29 patients with close follow-up. There was no significant difference of survival between high and low PCNA expression rate group, even after combined stratification by Gleason grade. It will be merited as a simple and powerful method to detect prostatic carcinoma with high potential of invasion, metastasis and clinical progression in spite of our results on prognosis.
